What is Folic Acid?
Folic acid is a member of the water-soluble group of B vitamins. It was first identified in the 1940s when it was extracted from spinach in the form of folate—which is the form found in foods. However, folic acid is the more stable form of this vitamin, so it is used vitamin supplements and fortified foods.;
Folic acid’s chief function in the body is DNA synthesis and therefore new cell formation, as well as amino acid metabolism including methionine—which is needed to reduce homocysteine levels. Once it enters the body, folic acid is converted into its active coenzyme forms (e.g., 5- methylenetetrahydrofolate (MTHF), dihydrofolate), at which point it performs its vital functions. Since the body can’t store it very long, it should be replenished daily.
This is particularly critical when you consider that nearly 10 percent of people have a MTHF-reductase enzyme defect, which prevents the proper conversion of folic acid into MTHF. When this conversion does not take place, you are at increased risk of heart and brain degeneration.
Several foods contain rich stores of folate, including dark leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, citrus fruits, berries, papaya, grapes, bananas, cantaloupe, legumes, avocado, okra, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, nuts and seeds, beets, corn, celery, carrots and squash. However, cooking or long storage can destroy up to half the folic acid in foods. Therefore, folic acid supplements can play a key role in providing adequate quantities of this important nutrient.
Folic acid is a water soluble B vitamin. Since 1998, it has been added to cold cereals, flour, breads, pasta, bakery items, cookies, and crackers, as required by federal law. Foods that are naturally high in folic acid include leafy vegetables (such as spinach, broccoli, and lettuce), okra, asparagus, fruits (such as bananas, melons, and lemons) beans, yeast, mushrooms, meat (such as beef liver and kidney), orange juice, and tomato juice.

Function:
1.Folic acid is used for preventing and treating low blood levels of folic acid (folic acid deficiency), as well as its complications, including “tired blood” (anemia) and the inability of the bowel to absorb nutrients properly.
2.Folic acid is also used for other conditions commonly associated with folic acid deficiency, including ulcerative colitis, liver disease, alcoholism, and kidney dialysis.Women who are pregnant or might become pregnant take folic acid to preventmiscarriage and “neural tube defects,” birth defects such as spina bifida that occur when the fetus’s spine and back don’t close during development.Some people use folic acid to prevent colon cancer or cervical cancer. It is also used to prevent heart disease and stroke, as well as to reduce blood levels of a chemical called homocysteine. High homocysteine levels might be a risk for heart disease.
3.Folic acid is used for memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, age-related hearing loss, preventing the eye disease agerelated macular degeneration (AMD), reducing signs of aging, weak bones (osteoporosis), jumpy legs (restless leg syndrome), sleepproblems, depression, nerve pain, muscle pain, AIDS, a skin disease called vitiligo, and an inherited disease called FragileX syndrome.
4.It is also used for reducing harmful side effects of treatment with the medications lometrexol and methotrexate.Some people apply folic acid directly to the gum for treating gum infections.Folic acid is often used in Combination with other B vitamins.
Application:
1. Folic acid is essential for synthesis of nucleic acid. A lack of folic acid can affect the synthesis of nucleic acid and cell division and replication.
2. Folic acid is important in adjustment of never cell growth and prevention of neural tube defects in developing embryos.
3. Folic acid is used for preventing and treating low blood levels of folate.
4. Folic acid is used to protect mucosa which is the active part of cell division, apoptosis, and regeneration.
5. Folic acid supplementation has established role in cancer treatment. Folic acid and nicotinic acid can protect chromo-some from the destruction of free radical.
